Affitech AS is granted a patent on key technology in phage display of antibodies

Affitech AS has been granted a patent by the US Patent Office covering the use of phagemid vectors in phage display of antibody fragments fused to the phage protein III. It is expected that this grant will be followed by the issue of other patents within the same family both in the US and Europe in the near future.

Phagemids are central tools of a new technology platform in biomedicine. One of their functions is to express a peptide of interest as a fusion to the coat proteins of filamentous phages, which are commonly used in phage display of antibody fragments. The granted patent covers key aspects of this technology.

"Being issued this grant from the US Patent Office is an important milestone for Affitech," says Dr. Ole J. Marvik, Managing Director of Affitech. "It demonstrates the strength of our core technology and establishes Affitech among a few companies with important proprietary technology in the field of antibody engineering."

Affitech is a young biotechnology company based in Oslo, Norway, which specializes in the development of high affinity antibody fragments using combinatorial biology. The company was formed in 1997 as a joint initiative between Dr. Ole J. Marvik, based in Oslo, and Prof. Melvyn Little at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. With key proprietary rights, as well as extensive experience and know-how, Affitech expects to become a leader in its field.
